Initially founded in 1903 by a local art club, the Mississippi Museum of Art opened a new building in 1978 to allow plenty of space for artwork and to hold temporary exhibits. The museum's permanent collection alone contains well over 4,000 works, focusing on American art from the 19th and 20th century, including a sizable portion of works by Mississippi artists. The museum is located in the downtown area, a block from the International Museum of Muslim Cultures.
